A Time of Thanks in 2020

A TIME OF THANKS

In this season of giving thanks, I wanted to let you know I am thankful for you. As part of the Justice At Last community, you have always been there and partnered with us and directly impacted trafficked persons seeking justice on their own terms. You are instrumental in the work we do here at Justice At Last, thank you!

I am also thankful for our passionate and dedicated staff, our devoted Board of Directors, our brilliant and graceful Advisors, our committed Volunteers and I am most grateful to my loving, patient and considerate family and friends who help support me everyday, thank you!

And on this Thanksgiving Day, as family members and close friends gather to share a meal, I express my deepest gratitude to all the essential workers who are keeping our country running during the pandemic, including healthcare workers, emergency services, farmworkers and agricultural laborers and everyone in the service and manufacturing industries for helping us do the best we can. Thank you all!

Founder and Executive Director

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

With the season of giving thanks, we wanted to share how fortunate we are to have volunteers on our team who support us every day in fulfilling our mission and objectives. In this newsletter, we spotlight two of our volunteers, Bella Flaherty and Caroline Brown - who were referred to us through the Anti-Trafficking Coalition at Berkeley, as a way of showing our appreciation for their contribution and dedication.  We are incredibly grateful and appreciative to both Bella and Caroline and we hope you enjoy learning about them and their volunteer experiences.

Bella Flaherty, Intern

"I first got involved in advocating for survivors and combatting the issue of human trafficking at UC Berkeley. This passion led me to become an executive team member of the Anti-Trafficking Club for two years. It was during this time where I learned about Justice At Last and the amazing work they do. I always told myself that I wanted to work for an establishment that I was truly proud of, and that’s precisely what pushed me to pursue an internship at Justice At Last.

Working at Justice At Last made me feel like I was part of a team—a team that was fervently dedicated to achieving justice for survivors. I was touched by every person I met during my time there, and I left with a type of knowledge and passion that I will carry with me throughout the rest of my life.

I now work as a legal assistant for an incredible public interest law firm and I plan to start law school in two years, where I will continue my studies in order to gain the skills to serve others through the legal profession and prepare for a career that, like my time at Justice At Last, I will be truly proud of."

Caroline Brown, Intern

"I volunteered at Justice at Last because I had a longstanding investment in the issue of human trafficking, and I wanted to look more deeply into the law side of the issue. While working at Justice At Last, I learned a lot beyond just how the law worked though; I also learned how important fostering trust with clients is, to best serve their needs in an appropriate and inclusive manner, and to consider them holistically, not just in the courtroom, as everyone at Justice at Last does such an amazing job at. Now I am in my first year of grad school at Oxford, getting my MPhil in Development Studies, and intend on studying violence against women and development narratives on a global scale."
